A multiple-variable logistic regression model to estimate cancer death risk: use of tobacco and alcohol as predictors. To develop a multiple-variable logistic regression model that is useful in predicting the risk of death from cancer in the general population, it was necessary to identify and include in the model the most powerful predictors for the development of cancer of specific sites, most of which are caused by tobacco and alcohol use. This study examined the accuracy and predictive power of this logistic regression model by comparing predictions from its development with those of predictions obtained from an equivalent multiple-variable logistic regression model that included only a single variable-tobacco or alcohol consumption. In addition, a subset of the data-used to develop the model for a specific site-was used to examine the ability of this model to predict death from cancer in an independent test population. The accuracy of the multiple-variable logistic regression model and a multiple-variable logistic regression model that included only tobacco consumption were similar in predicting the risk of death from cancer in a separate test population, as were their respective sensitivities. The predictive accuracy of the multiple-variable logistic regression model that included only alcohol consumption, however, was not as good in comparison with its multiple-variable counterpart.
